States of Matter with Oobleck – Early Years Science

Teaching the three states of matter to (very) young learners

Science concepts can be challenging for young learners because of their abstract nature. In this lesson, I adapted explanations and used varied methodologies to accommodate different learning needs, with a focus on everyday items and experiences familiar to children. Auditory learners benefited from clear, age‑appropriate explanation; visual learners engaged through simple diagrams and art; kinesthetic learners explored through hands‑on activities such as melting ice, acting out particle behavior, and experimenting with oobleck— a curious material that behaves like neither a typical solid nor a typical liquid.

This exploratory approach, tuned to the developmental stage of young learners, sparked curiosity and a love of inquiry. It also modeled how adapting pedagogy to learner needs makes abstract ideas concrete and memorable.
